The 12 signs are grouped into 4 elements. The most basic rule:

Why sun sign isn't enough
Your sun sign is only one piece. Real compatibility is measured with the full natal chart: the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Venus (love), Mars (passion), and the aspects formed between two charts (synastry).
