The Moon moves through 8 phases in its 29.5-day cycle. Each phase marks an energetic turning point: a moment to begin, release, expand, or culminate. Knowing them lets you sync your life with the oldest known cosmic rhythm.

The 8 moon phases

1. New Moon (πŸŒ‘)

The Moon is between Earth and Sun, its visible face in shadow. It's the moment to sow intentions. What you ask for now has strength. Ideal for: starting projects, setting goals, meditating on the future.

2. Waxing Crescent (πŸŒ’)

A thin crescent appears in the western sky at sunset. It's the phase of early action. What you started at the new moon needs first steps. Ideal for: making decisions, launching, taking the first step.

3. First Quarter (πŸŒ“)

Exactly half the disc illuminated, D-shaped. Represents the challenge and decision. It's a moment to overcome obstacles. Ideal for: reassessing, adjusting the plan, making a conscious effort.

4. Waxing Gibbous (πŸŒ”)

Almost full, but still waxing. It's the phase of refinement and patience. You're close to culmination, but not there yet. Ideal for: reviewing details, polishing, trusting.

5. Full Moon (πŸŒ•)

The Moon's visible face is fully illuminated. It's the moment of culmination, revelation, and emotional closure. Emotions intensify, secrets come to light. Ideal for: celebrating achievements, releasing what no longer serves, gratitude rituals.

6. Waning Gibbous (πŸŒ–)

Starts waning after fullness. It's the phase of gratitude and harvest. Enjoy what you built. Ideal for: giving thanks, sharing, evaluating what worked.

7. Last Quarter (πŸŒ—)

The other half illuminated, now waning. It's the moment to release and unlearn. What has completed its cycle must go. Ideal for: ending relationships, closing stages, forgiving.

8. Waning Crescent (🌘)

A last crescent before silence. It's the phase of rest, reflection, and preparation. Soon it will be new moon again. Ideal for: meditating, resting, cleaning space, preparing for a new cycle.

How does the Moon affect your life?

The Moon governs the tides and the body's fluids (composed 60% of water). Its influence on mood, sleep, and biological cycles is documented. Many people notice:

  • Full Moon: more insomnia, intense emotions, fights or reconciliations.
  • New Moon: moments of lower energy, introspection, hidden opportunities.
  • Quarters: peaks of decision and action.

The Moon's sign matters as much as its phase

The Moon changes sign every 2-3 days. When it's in Aries, emotions are impulsive; in Taurus, calm; in Gemini, scattered; in Cancer, intense. The phase tells you what to do; the sign tells you how to feel.
